Facebook Messenger now has 1.2 billion users

 

Messenger, one of Facebook’s chat apps, announced in early April 2017 that it has reached 1.2 billion users.

Facebook Messenger had 1 Billion monthly active users in July 2016.

It had 800 million monthly active users in January 2016

It had 500 million monthly active users in November 2014.

Facebook Messenger had 105.2 million active users in the U.S. in 2016- that’s 40% market share, according to eMarketer.

Last year, Messenger made a heavy push towards messaging-as-a-channel for commerce (aka messaging commerce or conversational commerce), particularly with the announcement of chatbots to could automate an end-users interactions with a business. Now, chatbots have not taken over the world by storm yet (but it will eventually), so Messenger is now a bit more focused on automating the experience via well-known responses. While it’s still pushing into commerce, this year Messenger seems to be focused on advertising to make money from its 1.2 billion users, according to Re/code
