Trion World Network, a developer and publisher of games and original entertainment for the Broadband world based in Redwood City, has raised $30 million in venture capital. The round was led by Rustic Canyon Partners, an LA-based VC firm with strong ties to the media and entertainment industry, and includes Time Warner, NBC-Universal, GE, and Bertelsmann. Current investors DCM and Trinity Ventures also participated.
Trion’s mission is to revolutionize entertainment by combining the best of online delivery, gaming and traditional media. With almost 50% of U.S. homes having broadband access, Trion’s network service model will clearly be a big deal. Trion will utilize the additional funding and relationships with the media stalwarts and content IP owners to develop and publish new connected games and entertainment franchises.
“The global media and entertainment industry is entering a disruptive cycle. Trion is uniquely positioned to define the future standard for dynamic games and entertainment across connected devices, by leveraging innovative technologies to build premium content channels around live programming,” says Nate Redmond, the Partner at Rustic Canyon who will join the board.
The company doesn’t even have a product out yet, but with Dr. Lars Buttler, former Vice President for Global Online at Electronic Arts, and Jon Van Caneghem, founder and CEO of New World Computing and creator of the best-selling Might and Magic and Heroes game franchises, Trion has a star-studded team that has shipped more than 100 original titles.
Bringing in a new set of VC firms is a good sign – it signifies access to new contacts and support towards strengthening Trion’s position in defining the future of connected games and entertainment. Look for more exciting news coming out of the Trion camp in the coming years.
